Memphis in May Championship...where’s NC?

Let me begin by stating that I mean no disrespect to the many talented, and well-deserving, cooking teams that were invited to participate in this world championship event.  BUT...where’s the North Carolina cookers?

The competition bills itself as, and I’ll quote directly from their web site:

“It's the Super Bowl of Swine. The College of Pig Knowledge. The Granddaddy of Grills. The Largest Pork Barbecue Cooking Contest on the Planet.”

Sooooo, this is the largest pork competition in the world, and North Carolina is the pork barbecue capital of the world, you’d think we’d be heavily represented. Right???? Wrong.

From the brochure, 258 teams competed.  How many of those are from our home state of North Carolina, where we are so passionate about our BBQ, that we argue about it??? 2 (two), yes, let me repeat that – 2 teams.

TN appears, by far to have the most represented teams.

Now why is that? The traveling distance, scheduling conflicts, other?  Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to this one, but felt it should be known.  Do you compete in these?  Have any insight for us all?

What do you think? Inquiring minds want to know!

I agree with your feelings.  I attended the MIM this year not as a contestant but as a spectator.  Frankly, the BBQ I had there was garbage and also prompted me to start competing.  I have only done one MIM event (now MBN) and was glad to take third place in whole hog in Charlotte.  However, I prefer the KCBS events where our team has done extremely well in the ones we signed up for.  The SCBBQA even has some good events.  The judging in MBN events is too closely associated with the national teams that have name recognition.  I prefer totally blind judging.

As for the NC teams?  None won in qualifiers and I suspect that is because few events are held close to here that are MBN events.  The number of both KCBS events and MBN events in the midwest FAR exceed the quantity here in NC so there are more opportunites to win.

I would not get caught up on the MBN marketing claim as the Superbowl of BBQ or World Championship.  If that was the case....what about the Royal or the Jack?

Now, if we can only get our own NCBBQ Society on the ball.......

I watched the BBQ Pitmasters do whole hog and it was the same thing. I was not impressed. They hacked up the hog before they even started cooking. I sent the TLC network a challange to bring the show and several of thier best cooks to the 2011 Newport Pig Cooking contest but as I thought I haven't heard anything yet. Maybe a little help from the NC Pork council
