  • ‘Ribs and Beans Throw Down with Bobby Flay’ Filming!

In case you haven’t yet heard, Bobby Flay was here in Raleigh yesterday and challenged local Ed Mitchell to a Ribs and Beans Throw Down. Yep, we were there front and center for the event.

While most of the attendees found out about it from an online posting, I was lucky enough to get a call from Food Network a couple weeks ago to get a heads up. Of course I had no idea it was going to be a Throw Down.

It was a really cold and rainy day but a lot of people still showed up for the taping. It was definitely an experience. Of course neither served as good as Ribs as I doSmile [:)], but great food was served by both.

Who won??? Well you’ll have to wait for the airing in May! I would highly recommend that all Rib lovers watch this episode!

(now if I could've only had my wife focus on us instead of the balloons in the background...!)

  • Memphis in May Championship...where’s NC?

Let me begin by stating that I mean no disrespect to the many talented, and well-deserving, cooking teams that were invited to participate in this world championship event.  BUT...where’s the North Carolina cookers?

The competition bills itself as, and I’ll quote directly from their web site:

“It's the Super Bowl of Swine. The College of Pig Knowledge. The Granddaddy of Grills. The Largest Pork Barbecue Cooking Contest on the Planet.”

Sooooo, this is the largest pork competition in the world, and North Carolina is the pork barbecue capital of the world, you’d think we’d be heavily represented. Right???? Wrong.

From the brochure, 258 teams competed.  How many of those are from our home state of North Carolina, where we are so passionate about our BBQ, that we argue about it??? 2 (two), yes, let me repeat that – 2 teams.

TN appears, by far to have the most represented teams.

Now why is that? The traveling distance, scheduling conflicts, other?  Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to this one, but felt it should be known.  Do you compete in these?  Have any insight for us all?

What do you think? Inquiring minds want to know!

  • Super Bowl Menu

So what are you going to cook for the big game?  I just put a brisket on the smoker as I write this and that got me thinking about what to cook in a couple weeks.  Pork BBQ? Ribs? Chicken? Brisket?  What's your menu going to look like?
