What can we do to kick start this site!

What can we do to kick start this site!  I'd love to see it become as active as other sites I see since it is specific to North Carolina!

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

Hey, I’m ready for full throttle!!!  All we really need are some truly active passionate participants.  It takes more than one or two people to build a successful community. I am more than happy to share what I know with others…I just need some others to help get it going.  Have a question??? Just ask!

So let’s start.  Along with you, I’m sure corndog and raine will be happy to help. And while we’re at it, what do you think about starting a founding fathers/mvp/king pig/king cooker/’Alpha-Mega-CookAPigga’/ etc program where the active members will be designated a special image along with all their posts?

I’ve been working hard getting the site up and running. Lots more to go. Now it’s time to get it going so all can learn.  Invite all you know to come help.  Ask questions, get answers, share what you know with others. And I’ll be happy to give our active people their own blog space on here. I’ll be happy to set it up.

    Corndog…Raine…you reading this too?

What do you all think?  I’m ready!  Post any other suggestions here.

    - Donald

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

I can only imagine how hard it is to start a site but it would appear that spreading the word is the first order of business which I will be glad to do with some other posts on sites such as the BBQ forum (Ray Basso's), assuming it is within their use agreements.

What draws people to sites like this and what makes them return?  Naturally information that is useful.  What other things can you folks think of?

A listing of upcoming BBQ Competitions would be helpful.  Cooperation with the North Carolina Barbecue Society would be helpful as would cooking techniques and support from local reatil stores.  And lastly, not just some type of special imagine, but......somehow, le's plan our OWN competition that others can join.  What a terrific way to spead the word!

Just out of curiosity....who owns the website and domain name?

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

Yep, good info is a definitely a key!  Next time you all cook a pig, tell otheres what you did, how it turned out, what you will do different/same, etc. Or remember about the last one you did and post the results.

Funny you mentioned the competition...this is something I have been thinking of. If nothing else to start, invite all together for some BBQ and discussions to get to know one another. With the impending winter season approaching, it's a great time to start planning to have something ready for the spring time.

And both this site and NCBBQ is mine (live in Raleigh/Cary area). At the start of the season, I get all the competitions from the state and post these on the Events page..about time to update it with the new festivals.  I will also work on getting it into the search engines better. This will also help drive traffic.

Spread the word to all you know and we'll start coming up with the 'founders' logo to display next to all you posts. All ideas welcomed!

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

Donald, when updating this site with contests, I would not restrict it to just NC events.  KCBS plays a huge role in influencing potential site visitors.

We do mostly KCBS competitions and talk to a lot of people, both contestants and visitors.  People depend onsites like this to keep them informed.  It appears that the North Carolina Barbecue Soiety does not update their web page very frequently so perhaps this site can be a replacement.......

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

Excellent idea. I get my competition information from the NC Pork Council (they are very helpful and willing to share).  Do you have a contact/web address for the KCBS competitions?

And we can update this site every day (hourly).

I do have an 'admin' area for approving the competitions that are submitted from visitors to appear on the site. I'll be happy to give you access so you can enter and/or approve events to be listed.

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

What about some interviews w/ competitors who are at these cookoffs, what ever the sanctioning body?  Or w/ area pit builders?  There are some fine pit builders willing to share info on what they do, what to look for and contact info for them?  I know if I were looking a new pit, or cooker, then I would like someone to point out items to look for that are functional, and just not pretty.  With the site name of North Carolina BBQ, this would be a good place to start.  I can get some info if we have a want/need...

What about some interviews w/ the resturants or caterers?  Maybe a short profile or bio to expand the "Featured Caterer" block?

Re: What can we do to kick start this site!

All excellent ideas. Go ahead and contact them if you know of someone...or we'll wait for the next competition or I'll go hunting for them from previous competitions.

One article I want to get finished is "Interview With The Judge', where I'll interview one of the judges and they cal tell what they look for/experiences/etc. There is a judge here locally and I'll see if he'll do it.

I'll try and get our 'logo' posted on Sunday :)

The pic looks good Donald.  When I have time over the holidays, I'll try to post a little bit on this past years catering events so that maybe that will help those who are looking to get into this. It was a great year for us!!!!
